Here's what worked for other parents in Cairns

Bring the stroller for
  • Cairns Esplanade — 2.5 km of wide, flat boardwalk and path with playgrounds and BBQs
  • Esplanade Lagoon — free, lifeguarded saltwater pool with toilets, showers and change rooms
  • Palm Cove — flat, shaded beachfront path, a playground and a netted, patrolled swimming area
Use a carrier for
  • Green Island — the rainforest walk takes a pram, the beach is soft sand
  • Kuranda Scenic Railway — children can't ride in prams and there is no proper pram storage
  • City waterfront — mudflats, not a swimming beach, so you'll need the Lagoon or the northern beaches

Cairns city is about as flat as Australian towns get: the 2.5 km Esplanade boardwalk, the free lifeguarded Lagoon and the streets behind them are smooth and level, and Palm Cove's paved beachfront path is just as easy. The catch is that the reasons you came - Green Island, the outer reef, Skyrail and the Kuranda train - all involve boats, gondolas or carriages where the pram has to be folded and stowed, so a compact fold-up pram plus a carrier is the winning combination. Buses exist but are thin on the ground, so most families hire a car or rely on tour pick-ups. Plan around the climate as well: December to April is hot, humid and very wet, and from roughly November to May you should only swim in the Lagoon or inside the stinger nets at the patrolled northern beaches.
