Djerba, Tunisia — stroller-friendliness guide for parents

Tunisia · Updated October 2026

Is Djerba stroller-friendly?

It depends—bring both.

Djerba is pancake-flat and its resort hotels are easy with a stroller, but outside the hotel gates there are few pavements, so plan on yellow taxis rather than walking.

Here's what worked for other parents in Djerba

Bring the stroller for
  • Resort hotels in the tourist zone — flat, paved grounds with pools and beach access
  • Sidi Mahrez beach — long and shallow, toddlers can wade a long way out
  • Seguia beach — calmer water plus toilets, showers and cafés
Use a carrier for
  • Roads in the tourist zone — patchy or no pavements beside fast traffic
  • Erriadh and Djerbahood — cobbled lanes and very little shade
  • Houmt Souk souks — lively but tight when busy

Djerba works best as a resort holiday. The big hotels along the east coast around Midoun and Sidi Mahrez have flat, paved grounds, pools and direct beach access, and Sidi Mahrez itself is long, sandy and shallow enough for toddlers to paddle a long way out. The island is almost completely flat, which helps, but the roads linking the hotels, Midoun and Houmt Souk often have no proper pavement, and buses are slow and infrequent. Yellow metered taxis are cheap and everywhere, though they don't carry car seats. Houmt Souk's souks and harbour are fine for a morning push if you avoid the busiest lanes. Erriadh's street-art lanes are cobbled with little shade, so take the carrier there. Pack a compact stroller for the hotel and town centres and a carrier for the beach, boat trips and villages.

Djerba is a do-one-thing-a-day island: a morning outing by taxi, then back to the pool for the hot afternoon. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months with a baby.

💡 Tip: Yellow taxis use meters and are cheap (an airport-to-Houmt Souk ride was around 20 TND in 2024). Check the meter is running when you set off. There are no car seats, and app taxis haven't worked on the island, so hotel-booked drivers are the safest option with a baby.
