Caves of Mount St. Pieter (Marl Caves)
Underground labyrinth of 20,000+ passages carved over centuries. Guided tours only — fascinating for older kids. Cool temperature inside year-round.
Netherlands · Updated May 2026
Maastricht is hilly by Dutch standards with cobblestone streets - charming but more challenging than other Dutch cities.
Planning your trip?
Maastricht breaks the Dutch stereotype - it's hilly. Located in the southern tip of the Netherlands, the city has genuine slopes and extensive cobblestone streets in its beautiful medieval center. The Vrijthof and Onze Lieve Vrouweplein squares are manageable, but streets like Stokstraat are narrow and cobbled. The Maas riverbanks are flat and pleasant. Transit is bus-only and less comprehensive than in the Randstad. Still, it's charming and locals are very friendly.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.

Home to the famous Mosasaurus fossil found in local marl quarries. Small, kid-friendly natural history museum. Interactive exhibits.
Maastricht feels more Burgundian than Dutch — think Belgian-style food, wine bars, and a relaxed pace. The city center is compact and walkable. Visit the caves in summer when it gets hot outside.
