New York's sidewalks are wide and mostly flat, making street-level strolling manageable. The challenge is the subway: only about 25% of stations have elevators, and they're often broken. Plan to walk, use buses, or take cabs. Once you adapt, NYC has incredible family activities. New Yorkers are busy but will help if you clearly need it.

Activities that work with a baby

Central Park Playground Crawl

20+ playgrounds in Central Park alone. Heckscher (biggest), Ancient (pirate ship), and Safari (hippos) are best for toddlers. Flat paths connect them all. Pack a picnic and spend the day.

American Museum of Natural History

Dinosaurs, the giant blue whale, planetarium. Kids are transfixed. Strollers welcome — elevators to all floors. The Discovery Room is hands-on for ages 5+. "Pay what you wish" for NY residents.

Staten Island Ferry

Free ferry with Statue of Liberty views. 25-minute ride each way. Strollers roll right on. Go at sunset for the best photos. This is the best free activity in New York, period.

NYC is surprisingly stroller-friendly above ground — sidewalks are wide, curb cuts are everywhere, and buses kneel for strollers. The subway is the problem: many stations have no elevator. Use buses or walk.

Where to stay

Neighborhoods that work for families

Best for families

Upper West Side

Best family neighborhood in Manhattan. Central Park, Natural History Museum, and Lincoln Center all walkable. Wide sidewalks, family restaurants, and Zabar's for groceries.

Local family vibe

Brooklyn (Park Slope / DUMBO)

More space, more playgrounds, more strollers per capita than Manhattan. Prospect Park is stunning. Family restaurants everywhere. Subway to Manhattan in 20 min.

Family Apartments in NYC

NYC hotel rooms are tiny and expensive. An apartment doubles your space and halves your food budget. Look in Upper West Side or Long Island City (amazing Manhattan views, much cheaper).

Avoid Times Square hotels — overpriced, overcrowded, and zero charm. Upper West Side or Midtown West gives you Central Park access and quieter streets while still being central. NYC hotel rooms are notoriously small — ask for room size in m² before booking.

Beyond the city

Easy day trips

Bronx Zoo

The largest urban zoo in the US. Congo Gorilla Forest, Wild Asia Monorail, and a huge children's zoo with farm animals. Free on Wednesdays (pay what you wish). Stroller-friendly.

45min subway/bus from Midtown

Coney Island

Classic boardwalk, Luna Park rides (toddler section!), Nathan's hot dogs, and the beach. Subway-accessible from Manhattan. Wonderfully old-school Americana. Best in summer.

1h subway from Midtown

Hudson Valley — Bear Mountain

Nature escape 1 hour north. Trailside Museum has bears, Hessian Lake for picnics, and easy hiking trails. A taste of upstate New York. Carousel and playground at the base.

1h drive

Use the MTA bus system with a stroller — all NYC buses have wheelchair ramps that work perfectly for strollers. Free transfer to subway within 2 hours. Much easier than wrestling a stroller down subway stairs.
