The colonial heritage area has narrow streets but the modern parts of the island are much more accessible. Malaysian culture is very family-friendly, and the food scene is legendary. Beach areas provide flat alternatives to heritage exploration.

Penang is Malaysia's food capital. Char kway teow, assam laksa, cendol — all at hawker centers. Air Itam, Gurney Drive, and New Lane are top spots.
Penang is hot and humid year-round. Mornings are best for street art walks. Hawker food is absurdly cheap — $2-3 per dish. The food alone is worth the trip.
