Here's what worked for other parents in Playa del Carmen

Bring the stroller for
  • Quinta Avenida — car-free, flat and lively, with shops and cafés for about 20 blocks
  • Playacar — a quiet gated resort area just south of the centre with a long, flat main avenue
  • Paseo del Carmen — an open-courtyard shopping centre with cafés, right next to the Cozumel ferry pier
Use a carrier for
  • Side streets off Quinta Avenida — narrow, uneven sidewalks and high curbs
  • Quinta Avenida in the evening — very crowded, and loud near the bars
  • Beaches when sargassum seaweed washes in — piles of weed and a strong smell in the worst weeks

Playa is the walkable alternative to Cancún. Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is a pedestrian street about 20 blocks long, a block back from the beach, and the whole town is flat. The side streets are another story: narrow sidewalks, high curbs and broken patches mean you'll often push in the road or carry. Getting around is by taxi or shared colectivo vans, neither of which suits a stroller or has car seats, so book transfers with a baby seat for anything further than a walk. Xcaret, ten minutes south, rents strollers and is mostly wheelchair accessible, while cenotes and beach days are carrier territory.

Walk everywhere

Central Playa del Carmen

Stay within a block or two of Quinta Avenida and you can walk to the beach, the ferry pier and dinner. Pick a street away from the bars around Calle 12 if you want quiet nights.

Hotels from ~$90/nightFind stays →
Space & kitchen

Family apartments & condos

Kitchen, washing machine and a separate bedroom for naps, often with a shared pool. Playa has lots of good-value condos a few blocks back from the beach.

Ask about a lift and a cot before you book: many smaller Playa hotels are walk-ups. If sargassum is bad when you travel, a resort with a big pool area matters more than a beachfront room.

Xcaret Park

The big eco-park ten minutes south of town: aquarium, butterfly pavilion, aviary, a children's area with a splash zone and sandbox for under-6s, and the evening México Espectacular show. Strollers can be rented at the park, and you can bring baby food in.

Xel-Há Park

A natural inlet turned into a snorkelling and floating park, with a children's area of slides and climbing ropes. Better for older siblings than for babies, but the shady hammock areas make for a lazy day for everyone.

Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue)

Playa's car-free main street, one block back from the sea: about 20 blocks of shops, cafés and ice cream. It's flat and easy with a stroller, and best after the midday heat.

Playa del Carmen beaches

Every street east of Quinta Avenida ends at the beach. Beaches in Mexico are public, the water is warm and usually calm, and there are beach clubs with loungers and shade if you want an easy base for the day.

Island day

Cozumel snorkel & beach day

Take the ferry from the pier at the bottom of Quinta Avenida to Cozumel for a calmer island day of beach clubs and snorkelling on the reef. Book a tour with transport on the island if you don't want to sort out taxis with a car seat.

Ferry from ~$40 return; under-6s freeCheck availability

Do Quinta Avenida and the beach early, retreat to the pool or a nap at midday, and head back out for an evening stroll. Pack mineral sunscreen if you're going to Xcaret or Xel-Há.

Travel Essentials for Playa del Carmen with Kids

🐠 Xcaret Park ticket
›
Book online before you go. Under-5s enter free, and strollers ($24.95) and lockers can be rented at the park. Bring mineral sunscreen.
Under 5 freeAges 0–4 free
⛴️ Cozumel ferry
›
Winjet and Ultramar both run the crossing from the Playa pier, with departures about every hour. Children aged 0–5 ride free.
Under 6 freeAbout $40 return per adult
💡 Tip: ADO buses run from every Cancún airport terminal to the Terminal Turística on Quinta Avenida (children half price), which is cheap but a lot to juggle with a baby. Ride-hailing isn't an option in Playa, so use taxis (agree the fare first) and keep colectivos for short hops with the stroller folded. Compared with Cancún's Hotel Zone, Playa is more walkable but has fewer step-free routes off the main street.
