San Sebastián has Europe's best urban beach with a wide flat promenade — the old town is hilly but the seafront is stroller heaven.
Planning your trip?
San Sebastián (Donostia) is built around a perfect crescent bay with La Concha beach as its centerpiece. The beachfront promenade is flat, wide, and gorgeous — ideal for strollers. The old part (Parte Vieja) has narrow pintxos-bar-lined streets that get packed in evenings. The hills on either side (Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo) are steep but optional. Basque culture is intensely family-friendly — children eat late, play in plazas, and are genuinely part of social life. The beach has gentle waves and fine sand perfect for toddlers. Local buses are modern and accessible.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Regularly voted Europe's best urban beach. Fine sand, gentle waves sheltered by the bay, and lifeguards in summer. The western end (Ondarreta) is the family section. The full-length promenade is flat and gorgeous.
Vintage 1912 funicular climbs to a retro amusement park with jaw-dropping bay views. The rides are charmingly old-fashioned — perfect for small kids. Strollers ride the funicular. The park has some slopes.
Modern aquarium right on the harbor with a walk-through tunnel and touch tanks. Fully accessible throughout. The oceanarium section has sharks and rays. Manageable size — 1-2 hours is enough.
Basque Country operates on late Spanish timing — lunch is 1:30-3pm, dinner is 9-10pm. Kids are welcome at all hours. For pintxos with a stroller, go to Parte Vieja at 1pm before the evening crowds.

Where to stay
Wake up and walk to Europe's best beach. The promenade is your stroller highway. Parte Vieja pintxos bars are walking distance. Hotels overlooking the bay are pricey but worth it. Book months ahead for summer.
Across the river from the old town, Gros has Zurriola surf beach and a younger, more local vibe. Flatter than the old town, with good restaurants and less tourist markup. 10-minute walk to La Concha.
The family end of the bay. Near Monte Igueldo funicular, quieter beach, and the Peine del Viento sculptures. Apartments here give you space and a kitchen. Local supermarkets have excellent Basque produce.
Book summer accommodation months in advance — San Sebastián fills up completely for July and August. Gros offers better value than Centro while being just as convenient. Avoid August first two weeks (Semana Grande festival — amazing but insanely crowded).
Beyond the city
Picturesque fishing villages 25 minutes west. Getaria has a Balenciaga museum and incredible grilled fish. Zarautz has the longest beach in the Basque Country. The coastal road between them is stunning.
Beautiful walled town on the French border with a quiet beach and colorful fishing harbor. The old town has cobblestones but is tiny and manageable. Take the boat across the bay from Hendaye for a scenic approach.
Glamorous French surf town just 30 minutes away. Grande Plage is a stunning family beach. The Aquarium is excellent. French pastries make a nice change from pintxos. Bring passports (Schengen, but just in case).
The Basque Coast bus (Lurraldebus) connects all the coastal towns cheaply. Hondarribia is the easiest day trip with kids — small, beautiful, and flat near the water.
Yes — San Sebastián scores 74/100 on our stroller scale. San Sebastián has Europe's best urban beach with a wide flat promenade — the old town is hilly but the seafront is stroller heaven.
