Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna, is built largely from volcanic black lava stone - which makes for beautiful but extremely rough street surfaces. Sidewalks are narrow, often blocked by parked cars and scooters, and the traffic style is characteristically Sicilian (creative with rules). The historic center around Via Etnea has some smoother sections, and the waterfront is improving. Sicilians are exceptionally warm to families - children are treated like royalty in restaurants.

Catania is HOT in summer — schedule outdoor activities before 10am or after 5pm. The baroque center has some uneven volcanic stone streets, so a compact stroller works best.

Travel Essentials for Catania with Kids

What to book before your family trip

🌋 Mount Etna — Family Excursion
Europe's most active volcano. Family tours go to the Silvestri Craters (2,000m) — flat lava fields where kids can walk on volcanic rock. Cable car goes higher (3,000m) but is not for babies (cold, thin air). Under-4s usually go free on tours. Bring warm layers.

🐟 La Pescheria Fish Market — Free Experience
Catania's raucous fish market behind Piazza Duomo is a sensory explosion — fish, street food, and Sicilian energy. Free to walk through. Morning only (closes by 1pm). Not exactly stroller territory in the narrowest parts but the main aisles work.
Free experience
💡 Tip: Catania's Via Etnea is the main street leading from the Duomo towards Etna — flat, wide, and great for strolling. Villa Bellini park has flat paths, a duck pond, and city views. Sicilians are obsessed with children — your baby will get more attention than Etna. Aci Trezza (15min north) has a beautiful seaside walk with the Cyclops Rocks from Homer's Odyssey.
