Galway Atlantaquaria
Ireland's national aquarium on Salthill promenade. Touch pools, native marine life, and a small but engaging experience. Stroller-accessible throughout.
Ireland · Updated May 2026
Galway is small, walkable, and incredibly welcoming - some uneven streets but the Atlantic charm and friendly locals make it worthwhile.
Planning your trip?
Galway is Ireland's bohemian west coast city, small enough to walk everywhere but with some challenges for strollers. The main shopping street (Shop Street/Quay Street) is pedestrianized but can be extremely crowded with buskers and tourists. Salthill promenade along the Atlantic is flat and perfect for strolling. The city center has some uneven pavements and narrow side streets. Transit is minimal - it's really a walking city. What Galway lacks in infrastructure it makes up for in warmth - this is possibly the friendliest city in Ireland, and that's saying something.

Where to stay
Walk to everything — shops, restaurants, Spanish Arch. Small city center means nowhere is far. Hotels book up fast in summer.
Seaside village feel, 20-minute walk from center. Beach, promenade, and aquarium on your doorstep. More space and better value.
Traditional Galway houses are colorful and cozy. Garden for kids, parking, and neighborhood pubs. Try Salthill or Knocknacarra.
Galway during festivals (Arts Festival in July, Oyster Festival in September) is magical but prices double and accommodation sells out months ahead. Book early or avoid peak weeks.
Beyond the city
Ferry to Ireland's most famous islands. Rent a pony trap or minibus for the tour — cycling with baby isn't practical. Dún Aonghasa fort is spectacular but unfenced.
Ireland's most visited natural attraction. Visitor center has changing facilities. The main viewing path is paved and stroller-manageable. Windy — dress warmly!
Wild Atlantic landscapes, ponies, and easy nature trails. The Sruffaunboy Walk (lower loop) is buggy-friendly on boardwalks.
Rent a car for Connemara and the Cliffs — public transport is sparse. The Aran Islands ferry from Rossaveal includes a bus connection from Galway. Book ferries in advance in summer.
It depends — Galway scores 58/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Galway is small, walkable, and incredibly welcoming - some uneven streets but the Atlantic charm and friendly locals make it worthwhile.
