Kigali is Africa's cleanest city but its dramatic hills and limited infrastructure make strollers impractical.
Planning your trip?
Kigali is famously Africa's cleanest city, with plastic bags banned and monthly community clean-ups. However, it's built on dramatic hills - the 'Land of a Thousand Hills' isn't just marketing. Streets are steep and often lack sidewalks despite the cleanliness. Modern areas like the convention center district have some flat, maintained paths, and new malls are appearing. A carrier is strongly recommended. Rwandans are extraordinarily warm and the country is very safe - one of Africa's safest for families.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Important and deeply moving museum. Well-maintained grounds with gardens. Accessible throughout. Not suited for young children content-wise.
Vibrant contemporary art gallery run by local artists. Colorful murals, workshops, and a café. Flat layout, welcoming to families.
Bustling local market with fabrics, crafts, and fresh produce. Narrow aisles make strollers tough — baby carrier works better here.
Kigali is one of Africa's cleanest cities but very hilly — think San Francisco. A compact, sturdy stroller is essential. Moto-taxis are everywhere but not baby-safe; use car taxis.

Where to stay
Central neighborhood with hotels, restaurants, and embassies. Relatively flat compared to other areas. Walking distance to main sights.
Upscale residential area with good restaurants and expat community. Safe, green, and relatively flat. Supermarkets nearby.
Affluent residential area with gardens and space. Homes often have outdoor areas for kids. Quiet and green. Drivers easily available.
Kigali is safe and welcoming but infrastructure is developing. Book accommodation with parking — you'll need a car or driver for most activities. Locals are incredibly helpful with families.
Beyond the city
World-famous gorilla trekking. Not possible with babies on the trek itself, but the park area and Musanze town are worth the drive.
Beautiful freshwater lake on the Congo border. Sandy beaches, calm water, and lakeside restaurants. Relaxing family day out.
Lake Kivu is the best family day trip — swimming, scenery, and a relaxed pace. Gorilla trekking requires children to be 15+, so plan accordingly.
Not really — Kigali scores 44/100, and a baby carrier will save your sanity. Kigali is Africa's cleanest city but its dramatic hills and limited infrastructure make strollers impractical.
