Muscat is the Gulf's most family-friendly city - excellent infrastructure and genuine Omani warmth.
Planning your trip?
Muscat stands out in the Gulf region for its family-oriented infrastructure and genuine hospitality. The city is well-planned with modern facilities, wide roads, and increasingly accessible attractions. Omani culture is particularly welcoming to families, and the dramatic mountain/sea setting is spectacular. Infrastructure is significantly better than many regional cities.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
One of the most beautiful mosques in the world. Enormous Persian carpet, crystal chandeliers, and immaculate gardens. Non-Muslims welcome mornings only.
Stunning architecture with manicured gardens. Free to walk the grounds. Check for family-friendly performances.
Oman's oldest souq — frankincense, silver, textiles. Less aggressive than other Middle Eastern markets. The Corniche walk is gorgeous.
Oman is incredibly safe and welcoming. Avoid summer (May-Sept) when it exceeds 45°C. October-March is perfect. Afternoon siesta is real — plan around it.

Where to stay
Modern waterfront development with marina, beach, and restaurants. Family-friendly promenade. Most self-contained area.
Central beach area with parks, malls, and diplomatic quarter. Walking distance to beach and natural park.
Residential area between airport and old Muscat. Modern villas with pools. Near supermarkets and restaurants.
Muscat is spread along the coast — you need a car. Al Mouj is most walkable. Omani hotels are excellent quality and very family-oriented.
Beyond the city
Stunning canyon with turquoise pools and a hidden waterfall. Beautiful walk in. Swimming through narrow canyons to the falls.
Cool mountain escape at 2,000m with terraced rose gardens and ancient villages. 4x4 required. Much cooler than Muscat.
Protected nature reserve with pristine reefs and turtles. Boat from Al Mouj Marina. October-May only.
Rent a 4x4 — many of Oman's best spots require it. Roads are excellent but wadi/mountain access needs clearance. Fuel is cheap.
