Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
One of the world's great aquariums, with whale sharks and manta rays in the huge Kuroshio Sea tank plus coral reef and deep-sea zones. It sits inside Ocean Expo Park, which rents strollers at the central gate.

Yes, with a rental car - Naha's monorail has lifts at every station and Japan-standard baby facilities are everywhere, but the beaches and Churaumi Aquarium are a long drive away.
Planning your trip?
Okinawa works well with a baby as long as you accept it's a road-trip island. In Naha, the Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport through the city with lifts and accessible toilets (with baby seats) at every station, and Kokusai-dori is a flat, wide shopping street. Beyond Naha you'll want a car: Churaumi Aquarium is around two hours north, buses can mean long waits, and Route 58 jams in summer. The hard parts are Shuri Castle's stone steps, sand at the beaches, and the heat, rain and typhoons from May to October, so bring a compact stroller, a carrier and a plan B for wet days.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Where to stay
The west-coast resort strip, roughly halfway between Naha and Churaumi: beachfront hotels with pools and their own beaches, ideal for a slower week.
Mid-island seaside town around American Village, with a flat, walkable seafront, sunset beaches and lots of easy family dining.
Stay near a monorail station such as Omoromachi, Kencho-mae or Makishi for step-free links to the airport and Kokusai-dori. Good for your first and last nights.
Condo-style apartments and holiday homes give you a kitchen, a washing machine and room to spread out, which helps a lot on a beach week.
Many families split the trip: a night or two in Naha by the monorail, then a beach resort in Onna or Chatan with the car. Check that the hotel has parking, because in Naha it often costs extra.
Things to do
One of the world's great aquariums, with whale sharks and manta rays in the huge Kuroshio Sea tank plus coral reef and deep-sea zones. It sits inside Ocean Expo Park, which rents strollers at the central gate.
Theme village in the south built around Gyokusendo, a long limestone cave, with traditional crafts and folk dance shows.
Naha's 1.6 km main street of souvenir shops and snack stalls, running between Kencho-mae and Makishi monorail stations. Detour to the Makishi Public Market, where upstairs restaurants will cook the fish you buy downstairs.
Seaside shopping and dining area in Chatan, with a west-facing beach and plenty of space for an evening stroll.
Beach inside Ocean Expo Park, a short walk from Churaumi, which makes it perfect for a paddle after the aquarium.
Do Naha on the monorail and save the car for Churaumi and the beaches. In summer, keep outdoor time to early morning and late afternoon, and save the aquarium or a mall for the midday heat.

Beyond the city
Bridge-linked island in the north with clear, shallow water and a small beach beside the bridge. Easy to combine with Churaumi.
Some of Japan's clearest water, a high-speed ferry ride from Naha's Tomari Port. It's beautiful but a long day with a baby, so consider staying a night.
Hilltop seat of the Ryukyu kings, still being rebuilt after the 2019 fire, though the grounds and views are open. Take the monorail to Shuri station.
Kouri and Churaumi make a natural pair for one long day, or stay a night up north. Book the Kerama ferry ahead in summer and check the forecast, because boats cancel in rough weather.
