Here's what worked for other parents in San Antonio

Bring the stroller for
  • Museum Reach and the Pearl — a wider, quieter stretch of the River Walk leading to the Pearl's plaza and restaurants
  • Alamo Plaza and grounds — free, flat, and all public areas are accessible
  • Brackenridge Park — big shady park with the Zoo and the Witte Museum side by side
Use a carrier for
  • River Walk access points — many are stairs, and you have to hunt for the ramps and elevators
  • Downtown River Walk loop at night and weekends — narrow paths and crowds by the water
  • SeaWorld, Morgan's Wonderland and the missions — spread out and hard to reach without a car

San Antonio is an easy, friendly city with small kids. Downtown is flat, the Alamo's grounds are free and accessible, and the big family days out (SeaWorld, the Zoo, the Witte Museum, Morgan's Wonderland) are built for families. The River Walk is the one to plan for. It runs one story below the street, plenty of the ways down are old stone staircases, the paths narrow at the busiest stretches, and in places nothing separates the walkway from the water. Find the ramps and elevators (hotels and the Shops at Rivercenter open straight onto the river), keep a hand on the stroller, and use the carrier for the crowded evening restaurant stretch. The quieter Museum Reach north to the Pearl is much easier with wheels. Beyond downtown you'll want a car, and summer heat runs from May to September, so plan mornings outside and afternoons in the air conditioning.

Where to stay

Neighborhoods that work for families

Best for families

Downtown River Walk

Stay right on the river and walk to the Alamo, Rivercenter and the barge docks. Pick a hotel with a river-level exit and an elevator, and you'll skip the stairs completely.

Hotels from ~$150/nightFind stays →
Calmer base

Pearl District

Quieter and roomier than downtown, on the stroller-friendly Museum Reach. You're close to Brackenridge Park, the Zoo and the Witte, with good restaurants on the doorstep.

Hotels from ~$200/nightFind stays →
Budget pick

Westover Hills (SeaWorld area)

Chain hotels with pools and free parking close to SeaWorld and Aquatica. Cheaper than downtown and handy for a theme-park-first trip, but you'll drive everywhere else.

Hotels from ~$100/nightFind stays →
Space & kitchen

Family apartments

A kitchen, a washing machine and a separate room for naps. Southtown and the King William area near downtown have plenty, and they're quieter than River Walk hotels.

From ~$130/nightFind stays →

Ask the hotel whether it has an elevator down to river level. It turns the River Walk from a stair workout into an easy stroll, and you can nip back for naps.

River Walk barge cruise

A 35-minute narrated Go Rio cruise around the downtown River Walk, leaving about every 15 minutes from 10am to 10pm. It's the easiest way to see the river without fighting the stairs and crowds, and toddlers love the boats.

Toddler rides

SeaWorld San Antonio

A big marine theme park on the west side. Small kids head for SeaWorld Rescue Jr. (opened 2025), with a carousel, a little coaster and gentle rides, plus sea lion and dolphin shows. Aquatica water park is next door with a separate ticket.

Dinosaurs

Witte Museum

Natural history and science in Brackenridge Park: a dinosaur gallery, Texas wildlife and the hands-on H-E-B Body Adventure. Indoors and cool for a hot afternoon. Closed some holidays and the third Monday in October.

Adults $17, ages 4–12 $11, 3 and under freeCheck availability
Animals

San Antonio Zoo

A 56-acre zoo in Brackenridge Park with a big African savanna (opened 2024) and the new Congo Falls gorilla habitat (December 2025). It's next to the Witte, so the two make a full day.

Free

The Alamo

The 1836 mission and battle site in the heart of downtown. The grounds are free and open daily 9 to 5:30; the Church needs a free timed reservation. Allow an hour, and use the Collections Center to cool off.

Pearl & the Museum Reach

Walk (or take the river barge) north along the Museum Reach to the Pearl, a converted brewery with restaurants, a plaza and a weekend farmers market. It's calmer and roomier than the downtown loop.

FreeJust walk in

Do the River Walk early in the morning, when it's cool and empty, and save the evening for a barge ride rather than pushing through the dinner crowds. Pair the Zoo and the Witte on one day, since both are in Brackenridge Park.

Beyond the city

Easy day trips

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Four 18th-century Spanish missions south of downtown, linked by the Mission Reach trails along the river. Start at Mission San José, which has the visitor center and the most complete mission complex.

15 min drive

Austin

Texas's capital, about 80 miles up I-35: Zilker Park, the trail around Lady Bird Lake and the Capitol. It works as a long day out, but it's hillier and just as hot.

1.5h drive

You'll need a car for both. Rideshares rarely come with car seats, so bring your own, and in summer leave early to be back in the air conditioning by early afternoon.
