Egypt · Updated May 2026
Cairo is incredibly challenging but historically priceless - Egyptians love children but infrastructure is tough.
Planning your trip?
Cairo offers some of the world's greatest historical treasures with significant infrastructure challenges. Traffic is chaotic, sidewalks are irregular, and accessibility is extremely limited. However, Egyptian hospitality toward families is legendary, and the historical experiences are life-changing. This requires maximum flexibility, carrier-only approaches, and realistic expectations.

Where to stay

Beyond the city
Older than Giza — the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the open-air museum at Memphis. Less crowded, more atmospheric. Often combined with a Giza visit.
Mediterranean port city with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (modern library), Citadel, and corniche seafood restaurants. Cooler than Cairo and refreshingly coastal.
Desert oasis with waterfalls, Lake Qarun, and Whale Valley fossils. Sandboarding possible. A completely different landscape from Cairo. Pack food and water.
Saqqara combines perfectly with Giza in a single day. Alexandria deserves an overnight. Always negotiate taxi prices before getting in, or use Uber/Careem for stress-free transport.
