Old Walled City Walking Tour
Colorful colonial streets, plazas, and street art. Flat cobblestones within the walls. Best in early morning before heat.
Colombia · Updated May 2026
Cartagena is beautiful and welcoming but the cobblestone old city and tropical heat create real stroller challenges.
Planning your trip?
Cartagena's walled old city is stunning - colorful colonial buildings, bougainvillea, and Caribbean vibes. However, the old city streets are cobblestone, narrow, and challenging for strollers. The city is flat (coastal) which helps. Bocagrande (the modern beach district) has better sidewalks and is more stroller-friendly. Colombians absolutely adore children - expect strangers to fuss over your baby. Heat and humidity are year-round intense. Street vendors and traffic make navigation tricky. Castillo San Felipe has ramps but is steep.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Colorful colonial streets, plazas, and street art. Flat cobblestones within the walls. Best in early morning before heat.
Massive Spanish fortress with tunnels and ramparts. Impressive views. Ramps available but some sections are steep.
City beach with a paved boardwalk, hotels, and restaurants. Calm water for wading. Vendors sell fresh fruit.
Cartagena is HOT and humid year-round. Carry water, sunscreen, and a stroller fan. Siesta time (1-4pm) is for pool/AC. Evening in the Old City is magical.

Where to stay
Stay inside the walls for magic-hour walks, restaurants, and history at your doorstep. Colonial boutique hotels with courtyards.
Modern high-rise hotels on the beach. Pools, ocean access, and a flat boardwalk. More resort-like feel.
Trendy neighborhood with rooftop pools, local food, and a young vibe. More affordable than the Walled City.
Cartagena is very affordable once you're there. Walled City hotels can be noisy (music until late) — ask for interior rooms. Getsemaní is the sweet spot of location + value.
Beyond the city
Boat trip to crystal-clear Caribbean islands. Beach clubs with shade and calm water. Boat ride is 45 min — bring shade for baby.
White sand beach on Barú island. Calmer and less developed than Rosario. Reachable by boat or land.
Quirky experience — float in warm mud inside a small volcano. Not ideal with babies but fun for toddlers with a parent.
Book island trips through your hotel — they can arrange family-friendly boats with shade. Morning departures avoid afternoon chop. Bring reef-safe sunscreen.
It depends — Cartagena scores 56/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Cartagena is beautiful and welcoming but the cobblestone old city and tropical heat create real stroller challenges.
