Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse — Food Market
Lyon's legendary indoor food market. Sample cheese, charcuterie, and pastries. Stroller-navigable aisles. A foodie pilgrimage.
France · Updated May 2026
Lyon's Presqu'île is flat and manageable, but Vieux Lyon and the hills of Fourvière and Croix-Rousse are tough with a stroller.
Planning your trip?
Lyon is France's gastronomic capital and a beautiful city split between flat riverside areas and steep hills. The Presqu'île (peninsula between the Rhône and Saône) is flat and excellent for strollers, with wide boulevards and pedestrian streets. However, Vieux Lyon (old town) has narrow cobblestone streets, and the Fourvière and Croix-Rousse hills are genuinely steep. The funicular to Fourvière is accessible and essential. Lyon's metro is modern with elevators at most stations. The traboules (secret passageways) are fascinating but impossible with strollers.

Where to stay
The peninsula between two rivers — flat, walkable, and full of shops and restaurants. The heart of Lyon.
Near the TGV station and Les Halles food market. Modern area with good transport links. More affordable.
Apartments in Croix-Rousse or the 6th arrondissement offer space, character, and proximity to Parc de la Tête d'Or.
Avoid Vieux Lyon hotels if you need flat terrain — it's charming but hilly. The Presqu'île is your best bet for strollers. Lyon's metro has lifts at most stations.
Beyond the city
Rolling vineyards and charming villages just north of Lyon. Family-friendly wineries offer grape juice for kids and picnic areas.
Perfectly preserved medieval hilltop village. Famous for galette de Pérouges (sugar tart). Small and charming.
Crystal-clear lake, canal-lined old town, and mountain views. Flat lakeside paths are stroller heaven. One of France most beautiful towns.
Annecy is one of the most beautiful day trips in France — go on a clear day for mountain reflections in the lake. TER trains from Lyon Part-Dieu are family-friendly and affordable.
It depends — Lyon scores 60/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Lyon's Presqu'île is flat and manageable, but Vieux Lyon and the hills of Fourvière and Croix-Rousse are tough with a stroller.
