Doctor's Cave Beach
Famous calm-water beach with soft white sand. Entrance fee includes changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. Shallow water perfect for babies.
Jamaica · Updated May 2026
Montego Bay resorts are family-friendly but outside them, hilly terrain and limited infrastructure make strolling very difficult.
Planning your trip?
Montego Bay is a tale of two experiences. Inside resorts (Half Moon, Hyatt Ziva, Iberostar), families are well catered to with flat grounds, pools, and kids' programs. Outside resorts, the city is hilly, sidewalks are minimal or nonexistent, and traffic is chaotic. Doctor's Cave Beach is beautiful but sand-based. The Hip Strip has some walkable sections. Jamaicans are wonderfully warm and love children. For stroller families, stick to resorts and organized excursions.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Famous calm-water beach with soft white sand. Entrance fee includes changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. Shallow water perfect for babies.
Beautiful restored plantation house with tropical gardens. Daytime family tours tell the legend of the White Witch.
Montego Bay's main tourist strip with restaurants, shops, and beach bars. Paved sidewalks, easy strolling.
Jamaica is laid-back — don't over-schedule. Beach morning, pool afternoon, jerk chicken dinner. Kids are welcomed everywhere. Stay hydrated — Caribbean sun is intense.

Where to stay
Walking distance to Doctor's Cave Beach, restaurants, and shops. Mix of all-inclusive and independent hotels.
Large resort area east of town. Hyatt, Hilton, and Iberostar all have excellent kids' programs.
Private villas in the hills above Montego Bay with pools and ocean views. Full kitchen and outdoor space.
All-inclusive resorts in Jamaica are excellent value — food and drinks add up fast otherwise. If independent, eat at local jerk joints (Boston Bay style) for the best value and flavor.
Beyond the city
Iconic terraced waterfall you climb up. Not stroller-friendly but the beach at the base is. Older toddlers can wade in lower pools.
Gentle bamboo raft ride down a peaceful river. Beautiful scenery. One parent + baby per raft works great.
One of the Caribbean's best beaches. Crystal-clear calm water, soft sand, and beachfront restaurants.
Hire a private driver rather than renting a car — Jamaican roads are challenging and drivers know the shortcuts. Hotels can arrange trusted drivers.
It depends — Montego Bay scores 53/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Montego Bay resorts are family-friendly but outside them, hilly terrain and limited infrastructure make strolling very difficult.
