Papeete Public Market (Marché de Papeete)
Vibrant Tahitian market with tropical fruits, flowers, pearls, and local crafts. Ground floor is stroller-accessible.
French Polynesia · Updated May 2026
Papeete and Tahiti offer stunning beauty and warm Polynesian hospitality, but limited infrastructure outside resorts challenges stroller use.
Planning your trip?
French Polynesia is paradise, and Papeete as the capital has the best infrastructure on the islands. The waterfront promenade along Papeete harbor is flat and strollable. Polynesian culture deeply values family - children are cherished and welcomed everywhere. The Marché de Papeete (market) is vibrant but crowded. Beyond Papeete, roads are narrow and sidewalks disappear. Resort areas (especially on Moorea and Bora Bora) have their own maintained grounds. French influence means reasonable infrastructure standards in town. A carrier is recommended for beach and nature exploration.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Vibrant Tahitian market with tropical fruits, flowers, pearls, and local crafts. Ground floor is stroller-accessible.
Seafront park with playgrounds, shaded walking paths, and views of Moorea. Popular with local families.
Polynesian history, navigation, and culture in an air-conditioned museum with ocean-view gardens. Recently renovated.
Papeete is the gateway — most families transit through to Moorea or Bora Bora. But the capital has 2-3 days of genuine charm. Sunday is very quiet; plan around it.

Where to stay
Central location near the market, ferry terminal, and restaurants. Modern hotels with lagoon views.
Practical for early flights to outer islands. InterContinental and other resorts with overwater bungalows and pools.
Local-style homes with tropical gardens and kitchens. Experience real Tahitian life. Often includes fruit trees.
French Polynesia is expensive — budget €150+/day. Papeete is the most affordable island. If heading to Bora Bora or Moorea, spend 1-2 nights in Papeete first to adjust to the time zone.
Beyond the city
Stunning volcanic island just 30 minutes by ferry. Snorkeling, beach time, and pineapple plantations. Far less developed than Bora Bora.
Drive around the island seeing waterfalls, blowholes, surfers at Teahupo'o, and Gauguin museum. Full-day loop.
Famous surf break and traditional Tahitian village. Boat tours to watch surfers. Beautiful and authentic.
The Moorea ferry (Aremiti) is modern, air-conditioned, and stroller-friendly. Book morning departure, return on the sunset ferry. Rent a car on Moorea for flexibility.
It depends — Papeete scores 58/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Papeete and Tahiti offer stunning beauty and warm Polynesian hospitality, but limited infrastructure outside resorts challenges stroller use.
