Livraria Lello Bookstore
One of the world's most beautiful bookstores (inspired Harry Potter). Very narrow aisles and stairs — absolutely not suitable for strollers. Go with carrier or skip with young kids.

Porto's riverfront is excellent for strollers - the hills in the old town require planning, but Portuguese warmth makes it worthwhile.
Planning your trip?
Porto combines stunning architecture with genuine family-friendliness, though the terrain varies dramatically. The Douro riverfront and modern areas are flat and perfect for strollers, while the historic Ribeira and upper city districts have steep cobblestoned streets. The metro system is modern and accessible. Portuguese culture is exceptionally welcoming to families - you'll find children genuinely celebrated everywhere. The key is choosing your areas wisely and using public transport strategically.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
One of the world's most beautiful bookstores (inspired Harry Potter). Very narrow aisles and stairs — absolutely not suitable for strollers. Go with carrier or skip with young kids.
UNESCO World Heritage riverside area with colorful houses and restaurants. The waterfront is flat, but climb to the bridge is steep. Great for photos and river cruises.
Contemporary art museum with huge park and gardens. Completely flat and stroller-friendly. The museum has lifts and the park has playgrounds and sculptures.
Porto is built on hills with lots of cobblestones and stairs. Plan your route carefully with a stroller — the riverside and modern areas are much easier than the historic hillsides.

Where to stay
Hip neighborhood with flat streets, galleries, cafés, and boutiques. More stroller-friendly than Ribeira but still central. Great restaurants and local atmosphere.
Beach suburb with direct metro connection to Porto center. Modern hotels, seafood restaurants, and beach access. Quieter and more spacious than city center.
Spacious apartments with kitchens, often in renovated buildings. Look for ground floor or elevator access. Many in residential areas with local markets nearby.
Avoid staying in Ribeira with a stroller — it's all steep cobblestones and stairs. Cedofeita or beach areas are much more practical while still giving good access to attractions.
Beyond the city
Charming canal city with colorful boats (moliceiros) and Art Nouveau architecture. Flat city center perfect for strollers. Famous for ovos moles sweets.
Historic city with beautiful churches. The famous Bom Jesus has a funicular railway to avoid the stairs. The city center and sanctuary top are stroller-accessible.
UNESCO World Heritage wine terraces and river cruises. Most quintas (wineries) have steep vineyard paths, but river cruises and main roads are accessible. Stunning scenery.
Portuguese trains are modern and comfortable with space for strollers. The coastal train line north of Porto has beautiful ocean views and connects many small beach towns.
It depends — Porto scores 64/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Porto's riverfront is excellent for strollers - the hills in the old town require planning, but Portuguese warmth makes it worthwhile.
