Finland · Updated May 2026
Rovaniemi is magical for families but snow and ice make strollers a serious challenge — plan for a rugged setup or switch to a sled.
Planning your trip?
Rovaniemi is the official hometown of Santa Claus and a bucket-list winter destination for families. The city itself is flat and compact, but deep snow cover from November through April turns sidewalks into packed-ice trails that defeat most stroller wheels. Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Centre are well-maintained and accessible, but moving between attractions often means navigating plowed-but-slippery paths. In summer (June–August), the city transforms — paths are clear, midnight sun keeps kids entertained, and strolling is genuinely pleasant. Finnish family culture means excellent changing facilities and welcoming attitudes everywhere.

Rovaniemi is small and manageable. City center is best for accessibility; Napapiiri is best for the Santa experience. Finnish hotels almost always have saunas — even family rooms. Tap water is excellent.
Beyond the city
If staying downtown, the village is a quick bus ride north. Spend a full day — there's Santa's Post Office, snowmobile tours, and the Arctic Circle line.
Finland's northernmost zoo, an hour south. Combine with lunch at a local restaurant. The polar bears are the stars — feeding times are incredible.
In winter, daylight is very limited (Nov-Jan). Plan outdoor activities for the few hours around midday. Northern Lights are best seen away from city lights — many tours run from 8pm.
It depends — Rovaniemi scores 58/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Rovaniemi is magical for families but snow and ice make strollers a serious challenge — plan for a rugged setup or switch to a sled.
