White Tower & Waterfront Walk

Thessaloniki's waterfront promenade is flat and beautiful, but the Ano Poli upper town is steep and challenging.
Planning your trip?
Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and a vibrant, lived-in destination that's less touristy than Athens. The waterfront Nikis Avenue promenade is flat, wide, and perfect for strolling - from the White Tower to the concert hall is a beautiful walk. The central commercial area (Tsimiski Street) is flat and manageable. However, the historic Ano Poli (Upper Town) is built on a steep hillside with narrow streets and steps. Greek culture is extremely child-friendly - tavernas welcome families, and locals adore babies. Transit is bus-only (metro under construction) and chaotic. Sidewalk parking is a constant obstacle.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Thessaloniki's iconic landmark and the long waterfront promenade (Nea Paralia). The 5km walk is flat, wide, with playgrounds, themed gardens, and cafés along the way.
Gold treasures from ancient Macedonia, including items from Philip II's tomb. Modern, air-conditioned, and elevator-accessible. Kids enjoy the gold and weapons.
Covered food markets in the center — olives, cheese, spices, and fresh fish. Modiano is renovated and spacious; Kapani is more traditional and tighter.
Thessaloniki is Greece's food capital — try bougatsa (cream pastry) for breakfast, souvlaki for lunch, and waterfront seafood for dinner. Greeks eat late — restaurants fill up after 9pm.

Where to stay
Right on the promenade near restaurants, the port, and Aristotelous Square. Flat, walkable, and lively but not as noisy as you'd expect.
The city's grand central square. Beautiful architecture, great cafés, and walking distance to markets, museums, and the waterfront.
Generous apartments with balconies overlooking the Thermaic Gulf. Greek apartments are spacious. Kalamaria neighborhood is quiet and residential.
Thessaloniki is great value — much cheaper than the islands and Athens. The lower town (near the waterfront) is flat and stroller-perfect. Avoid Ano Poli with a stroller — the views aren't worth the sweat.
Beyond the city
Turquoise waters and sandy beaches an hour away. Kallithea and Sani have family-friendly beach bars with shallow water and changing facilities.
Underground museum built around the unlooted tomb of Philip II (Alexander the Great's father). Spectacular gold artifacts. Air-conditioned and accessible.
Natural hot springs in a mountain gorge. Outdoor pools with family sections. Magical in winter with steam rising. Indoor pools for babies.
Halkidiki beaches are stunning but July–August gets very crowded. Visit in June or September for warm water, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Rent a car — no public transport to the beaches.
It depends — Thessaloniki scores 58/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Thessaloniki's waterfront promenade is flat and beautiful, but the Ano Poli upper town is steep and challenging.
