Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and a vibrant, lived-in destination that's less touristy than Athens. The waterfront Nikis Avenue promenade is flat, wide, and perfect for strolling - from the White Tower to the concert hall is a beautiful walk. The central commercial area (Tsimiski Street) is flat and manageable. However, the historic Ano Poli (Upper Town) is built on a steep hillside with narrow streets and steps. Greek culture is extremely child-friendly - tavernas welcome families, and locals adore babies. Transit is bus-only (metro under construction) and chaotic. Sidewalk parking is a constant obstacle.

Thessaloniki is great value — much cheaper than the islands and Athens. The lower town (near the waterfront) is flat and stroller-perfect. Avoid Ano Poli with a stroller — the views aren't worth the sweat.

Beyond the city

Easy day trips

Halkidiki beaches are stunning but July–August gets very crowded. Visit in June or September for warm water, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Rent a car — no public transport to the beaches.

Quick answers

It depends — Thessaloniki scores 58/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Thessaloniki's waterfront promenade is flat and beautiful, but the Ano Poli upper town is steep and challenging.
