Ulaanbaatar is a fascinating contradiction: a modern city rising from the steppe with Soviet-era bones and nomadic soul. The central area around Sükhbaatar Square is fairly flat and walkable. Peace Avenue is the main artery with decent sidewalks. However, the ger (yurt) districts on the hills lack any infrastructure, traffic is congested, and winter conditions (-30°C) make stroller use impossible for months. The city is rapidly developing, with new malls and parks improving family accessibility.

💡 Tip: Ulaanbaatar is a city of contrasts — modern malls next to Buddhist temples. The Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan is flat and stroller-accessible. Sukhbaatar Square is wide and open. UB's air pollution is severe in winter (Oct-Mar) — visit in summer when the steppe is green and warm. The Naadam Festival (July 11-13) has horse racing, archery, and wrestling.
