Sea Organ & Sun Salutation
Unique sea organ played by waves and a solar-powered light installation. Kids are mesmerized by both. Flat waterfront promenade, completely stroller-friendly.
Croatia · Updated May 2026
Zadar's waterfront is flat and the Sea Organ is magical - but the old town has uneven marble streets and limited facilities.
Planning your trip?
Zadar is a beautiful Adriatic city with a compact old town peninsula. The waterfront Riva promenade is flat and perfect for strolling, featuring the famous Sea Organ and Sun Salutation installations. Inside the old town, the marble-paved streets are smooth in places but uneven in others, and some alleys are narrow. The city lacks the infrastructure of larger Croatian cities - limited public transit, fewer elevators, and basic baby facilities. However, it's less crowded than Dubrovnik, more affordable, and the locals are warm. The beaches nearby are mostly rocky/pebble with some sandy options.

Where to stay
Stay inside the ancient walls — walk to everything. Marble streets are flat. Apartments in old stone buildings have character but check for stairs.
Resort area 3km from Old Town with sandy beaches, pools, and family hotels. More space, calmer, and better beach access for kids.
Croatia has excellent apartment rentals. Look for ones with terrace, parking, and kitchen. Neighborhoods like Jazine or Voštarnica are close to center.
Zadar is one of Croatia's best-value coastal cities — much cheaper than Dubrovnik or Split with equally beautiful water. Book apartments with parking if you plan national park day trips.
Beyond the city
Stunning waterfalls you can swim near (seasonal). Wooden boardwalks through the park are stroller-possible but narrow in places. Skradinski Buk is the main attraction.
Croatia's crown jewel — 16 terraced lakes with waterfalls. Wooden boardwalks are technically stroller-possible but very crowded. Carrier recommended.
Scattered islands with crystal-clear water. Organized boat trips include swimming stops and lunch. Kids love the boat ride and snorkeling.
Krka is more family-friendly than Plitvice — less crowded, you can swim, and the boardwalks are wider. Visit either park early morning to beat tour bus crowds.
It depends — Zadar scores 57/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Zadar's waterfront is flat and the Sea Organ is magical - but the old town has uneven marble streets and limited facilities.
