Stone Town Walking Tour
UNESCO World Heritage old town with carved doors, spice markets, and Freddie Mercury's birthplace. Narrow alleys bursting with history.
Tanzania · Updated May 2026
Zanzibar offers incredible culture and beaches - Stone Town challenging but beach resorts much easier.
Planning your trip?
Zanzibar combines incredible Swahili culture with beautiful beaches. Stone Town is a UNESCO site with narrow alleys and no accessibility, but beach resort areas have much better infrastructure designed for tourism. Tanzanian hospitality toward families is exceptional. The spice tours and cultural experiences are magical with proper planning.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
UNESCO World Heritage old town with carved doors, spice markets, and Freddie Mercury's birthplace. Narrow alleys bursting with history.
See, smell, and taste cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, and nutmeg growing. Kids love the hands-on tasting. Guides make hats from palm leaves.
White sand, turquoise water, and minimal tide changes. Nungwi has more restaurants; Kendwa is quieter. Shallow water perfect for toddlers.
Zanzibar is a beach destination — adjust expectations for infrastructure. Dirt roads, power cuts, and limited baby supplies outside Stone Town. Bring everything you need.

Where to stay
Best swimming beach — minimal tide change means water is always accessible. Resort area with restaurants and beach bars.
Quieter than Nungwi, equally beautiful. Fewer hotels means more space. Also minimal tide issues.
East coast kite-surfing village with family villas. Stunning beach but major tidal changes. Great value.
Nungwi or Kendwa for beach families — the tide issue on the east coast is real. Stone Town is great for 1-2 nights of culture.
Beyond the city
Short boat ride to an island with giant Aldabra tortoises. Kids can feed and touch them. Some snorkeling around the island.
Pristine coral reef with dolphins, turtles, and tropical fish. Dolphin spotting on the way. Older toddlers enjoy the boat ride.
Instagram-famous restaurant on a rock in the sea. Book lunch at low tide. East coast beaches are gorgeous but very tidal.
Prison Island is the best family day trip — tortoises are amazing for any age. Book boats through your hotel, not beach touts.
Not really — Zanzibar scores 46/100, and a baby carrier will save your sanity. Zanzibar offers incredible culture and beaches - Stone Town challenging but beach resorts much easier.
