Gdańsk's waterfront Long Market is beautiful but cobblestoned - stick to the main routes and the modern areas for easier strolling.
Planning your trip?
Gdańsk is one of Poland's most beautiful cities, rebuilt meticulously after WWII. The main tourist spine - from the Golden Gate through Long Market to the Green Gate - is wide and manageable but cobblestoned. The Motława waterfront has a mix of smooth and uneven surfaces. Side streets in the old town can be narrow and rough. The modern areas (Oliwa, Wrzeszcz) are much smoother. Sopot and its pier are nearby and more family-oriented. Polish people are increasingly family-friendly in public spaces, and facilities are improving rapidly. The SKM commuter train connects the Tri-City area well.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Award-winning museum about the Solidarity movement. Interactive exhibits, rooftop terrace with shipyard views. Fully accessible with elevators.
Stunning rebuilt merchant houses along Long Market. Neptune's Fountain, colorful facades, amber shops. Flat cobblestones — rideable with decent wheels.
Compact zoo with a good playground and animal feeding sessions. Oliwa district — combine with the nearby Oliwa Park and Cathedral organ concerts.
Poland is incredibly affordable — a family meal costs a fraction of Western Europe. GdaÅ„sk's Old Town is rebuilt post-WWII but looks authentically medieval. The city is very family-welcoming.

Where to stay
Right in the historic center. Walk to everything. Hotels in renovated townhouses — check for elevator access. Beautiful but cobblestoned.
Lively university district with parks, cafés, and better prices. Tram to Old Town in 15 minutes. Real neighborhood feel.
Spacious apartments in Old Town or Oliwa. Kitchen, laundry, and much more space than hotels. Poland's apartments are great value.
Gdańsk is one of Europe's best-value family destinations. The Tricity (Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia) offers city + beach in one trip. Summer days are long (until 10pm) and the Baltic is surprisingly warm.
Beyond the city
World's largest castle by area — a UNESCO-listed Teutonic fortress. Kids love the knights and dungeons. Mostly accessible but some towers have stairs.
Glamorous seaside resort with Europe's longest wooden pier. Wide sandy beach, Monte Cassino pedestrian street, and Crooked House.
Narrow sandy peninsula with beaches, a seal aquarium, and fishing villages. The train ride along the spit is scenic. Windy but gorgeous.
The SKM commuter train connects GdaÅ„sk, Sopot, and Gdynia cheaply — it's called the Tricity. Malbork is the best castle day trip in Poland. Book Hel Peninsula on a calm day — wind can be intense.
It depends — Gdańsk scores 63/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Gdańsk's waterfront Long Market is beautiful but cobblestoned - stick to the main routes and the modern areas for easier strolling.
