Gateway of India & Colaba Walk
Mumbai's iconic monument on the waterfront. Walk Colaba Causeway for street shopping and chai. Buzzing atmosphere.
India · Updated May 2026
Mumbai is intense, crowded, and chaotic - but surprisingly flat, and Indians are incredibly welcoming to children.
Planning your trip?
Mumbai is one of the world's most densely populated cities and it shows. Sidewalks are often occupied by vendors, pedestrians, and vehicles simultaneously. However, the city is largely flat, and the newer areas like Bandra-Kurla Complex and Lower Parel have modern infrastructure. The Mumbai Metro (expanding rapidly) is accessible. Luxury hotels and modern malls offer excellent facilities. The biggest challenge is the sheer intensity of the street experience. Indians adore children - expect constant friendly attention.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Mumbai's iconic monument on the waterfront. Walk Colaba Causeway for street shopping and chai. Buzzing atmosphere.
Ferry from Gateway of India to UNESCO cave temples on Elephanta Island. Impressive rock-cut sculptures.
Large interactive science museum with planetarium. Great for curious kids. Air-conditioned — perfect monsoon activity.
Mumbai sidewalks are chaotic — a baby carrier is often more practical than a stroller. Visit big sights early morning. Monsoon season (Jun-Sep) means indoor plans.

Where to stay
Walking distance to Gateway of India, Taj Hotel, and Colaba Causeway. The classic Mumbai experience.
Mumbai's hip suburb — great cafés, Bandstand promenade, and Bollywood spotting. More spacious than South Mumbai.
Beach-adjacent neighborhood with family hotels. Juhu Beach sunset is iconic. Street food capital of Mumbai.
South Mumbai (Colaba) is best for sightseeing. Bandra is the local favorite with more space. Mumbai traffic is brutal — stay near what you want to see.
Beyond the city
Escape Mumbai's heat in the Western Ghats. Waterfalls, lush valleys, and cool mountain air. Stunning in monsoon.
Beach town across the harbor — ferry from Gateway of India. Clean beaches, Kolaba Fort at low tide.
Lonavala is magical in monsoon season but roads get busy weekends. Take the train — scenic and avoids traffic. Alibaug is the easier beach escape.
It depends — Mumbai scores 50/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Mumbai is intense, crowded, and chaotic - but surprisingly flat, and Indians are incredibly welcoming to children.
