Tbilisi Cable Car to Narikala Fortress
Modern cable car over the old town to the hilltop fortress. Stunning views of the city. The fortress ruins are open but uneven — carrier recommended on top.
Georgia · Updated May 2026
Tbilisi's old town is hilly and cobbled, but modern areas offer smooth wide boulevards and welcoming locals.
Planning your trip?
Tbilisi presents a split personality for stroller users. The charming Old Town with its narrow cobblestone streets and steep hills is challenging, but the modern Rustaveli Avenue area and newer districts like Vake offer wide, smooth sidewalks. The metro has limited accessibility, but the cable cars provide scenic alternatives. Georgians are exceptionally family-friendly and will go out of their way to help parents with strollers.
Seven things that actually matter when you're pushing 12kg of baby + stroller through a foreign city.
Things to do
Modern cable car over the old town to the hilltop fortress. Stunning views of the city. The fortress ruins are open but uneven — carrier recommended on top.
Massive pillars overlooking Tbilisi Sea reservoir. Uncrowded, dramatic, and free. Kids love climbing around the base. Flat area at the top.
Traditional Georgian houses from every region, set in a forested hillside. Paths are unpaved but manageable. Beautiful views and picnic spots.
Georgia is unbelievably affordable and extremely child-friendly. Georgian culture reveres children — expect strangers to offer help, food, and compliments. The food is incredible and kid-approved (khachapuri!).

Where to stay
The atmospheric old town with sulfur baths, cable car, and Narikala. Hilly and cobblestoned but charming. Many boutique guesthouses.
Tree-lined residential neighborhoods with parks, cafés, and flat(ter) streets. More livable, less touristy. Near Vake Park with playground.
Gorgeous renovated apartments with high ceilings, balconies, and kitchens. Georgian hospitality means hosts go above and beyond for families.
Georgia is one of Europe's best-value destinations — a family can eat incredibly well for €20/day. Tbilisi is hilly — Vera/Vake neighborhoods are flatter. Tap water is safe. Everyone loves babies here.
Beyond the city
UNESCO-listed ancient capital with two spectacular churches. Jvari Monastery has panoramic views. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is in the walkable town center.
Medieval fortress on a turquoise reservoir. Dramatic setting, easy to visit. The fortress has stairs but the surrounding area is flat and scenic.
Charming walled town in the Kakheti wine region. Cobblestoned but compact. Wine tastings with family-welcoming wineries. Beautiful views of the Alazani Valley.
Hire a driver for day trips — incredibly affordable (GEL 100–150/day) and they know the roads. Georgian driving is aggressive but drivers are experienced. Car seats are rare — bring your own.
It depends — Tbilisi scores 50/100. Doable with planning, but not effortless. Tbilisi's old town is hilly and cobbled, but modern areas offer smooth wide boulevards and welcoming locals.
