Is Santorini stroller-friendly?

Nopack a baby carrier.

Santorini is breathtaking but brutally steep — the iconic caldera villages are a stroller nightmare. Beach towns like Kamari are the family-friendly escape.

Here's what worked for other parents in Santorini

Bring the stroller for
  • Kamari Beach — flat promenade, paved waterfront, restaurants with space
  • Perissa Beach — similar flat layout, black sand, family-friendly tavernas
  • Fira new town (main road) — the one relatively flat commercial street
Use a carrier for
  • Oia — the Instagram village is pure steps, narrow paths, and crowds
  • Fira caldera edge — dramatic views but steep, stepped access everywhere
  • Amoudi Bay — 300+ steps down from Oia to the tiny fishing port

Let's be honest: Santorini's most famous spots — Oia's blue domes, Fira's cliffside cafes, the caldera path — are among the least stroller-friendly places in Europe. We're talking about narrow cobblestone lanes carved into volcanic cliffs, hundreds of steps between levels, and zero ramps in traditional villages. Donkeys still carry luggage up these paths for a reason. However, Santorini has a gentler side that families can absolutely enjoy. The beach towns on the east coast — Kamari and Perissa — are flat, have paved promenades, and offer family-friendly swimming on black-sand beaches. Fira's newer sections have some accessible streets, and most hotels will help with accessibility. Greek culture warmly welcomes children, restaurants are happy to accommodate families, and the food is incredible. The key is setting expectations: come for the beaches and relaxed Greek island life, not for strolling through Oia with a pram.

Caldera Catamaran Cruise with Lunch

The absolute best way to experience Santorini with kids. Sail past the caldera cliffs, swim at volcanic hot springs, and eat Greek lunch on deck. No stairs, no cobblestones — just stunning views from the water. Most operators welcome families.

From €95/personCheck availability

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

A 3,600-year-old Minoan city preserved under volcanic ash — Santorini's Pompeii. Covered site with raised metal walkways. One of the few stroller-possible attractions on the island. Fascinating for older kids.

From €12/adult, under 18 freeCheck availability

Kamari Beach Day

The family-friendly side of Santorini. Flat black-sand beach with organized sunbeds, shallow entry, and a paved promenade lined with restaurants. Open-air cinema in the evening. The anti-Oia experience.

FreeJust walk in

Plan your Santorini trip around two modes: beach days (stroller-fine in Kamari/Perissa) and caldera experiences (carrier-only or by boat). A catamaran cruise replaces the need to walk through Oia and Fira with kids — you see everything from the water.

Where to stay

Neighborhoods that work for families

Best for families

Kamari Beach

THE family base on Santorini. Flat black-sand beach, paved promenade, playground, organized beach with lifeguards. Restaurants, supermarkets, and an open-air cinema. Close to Akrotiri and the airport.

Budget pick

Perissa Beach

Similar to Kamari but quieter and more budget-friendly. Long black-sand beach, waterpark nearby, and good tavernas. Connected to Kamari by a path around Mesa Vouno headland.

Hotels from €50/nightFind stays →
Caldera views

Fira (New Town Area)

If you want caldera views, Fira's newer section along the main road has some accessible hotels. You'll still face steps to reach caldera-view restaurants, but daily logistics are easier than Oia.

Hotels from €80/nightFind stays →
Authentic feel

Airbnb — Megalochori Village

Traditional Cycladic village with some wider streets and less tourist chaos than Oia. Whitewashed houses, wine caves, and a more authentic island experience. Some properties have private pools.

Apartments from €70/nightFind stays →

Do NOT book a caldera-view cave hotel in Oia if you have a stroller — most require 50-100 steps to reach with no vehicle access. Kamari is the smart family base: flat, affordable, and you can drive to caldera viewpoints for sunset. Save the cliffside romance for a trip without kids.
